What is the meaning of Oscar Wilde’s quote “Romance lives by repetition, and repetition converts an appetite..?

“Romance lives by repetition, and repetition converts an appetite into an art. Besides, each time that one loves is the only time one has ever loved. Difference of object does not alter singleness of passion. It merely intensifies it. We can have in life but one great experience at best, and the secret of life is to reproduce that experience as often as possible.”

Partly it means, “Practice makes perfect.”

The idea is that the experience of romance can persist only if one loves again and again. (The implication being that romance will eventually die in one relationship.) With each new love, romance lives anew, all other loves are forgotten, and the romance itself may be ever more intense, ever better, even an art.

Wilde is also suggesting that for human beings, romance may be the one great experience most human beings can have and therefore one should seek to repeat it. The implication of THAT is that no one love can truly last; to enjoy romance to the fullest, we must move on to the next love.
